How to Remove Old Grout

Over time, the grout that fills the gaps between tiles deteriorates even if the tiles themselves are still in good condition. Here are a few simple tips on how to remove old, dirty grout without getting rid of your expensive tiles. First, get a grout saw, which is a hand tool that has a blade attached to the head of what seems to be a bent screwdriver. Cut a groove in the old grout with a few passes of the saw. Use an even, firm pressure when cutting a groove.

Next, insert a grout scraper, a hand tool that looks like a screwdriver with a triangular head, into the groove and start pulling the grout out. Use a rubber mallet to expand the groove by tapping the back of the scraper gently. Scrape the grout toward open space to avoid damaging the nearby tiles. Continue doing the process until most of the old grout is scraped off. Use a file or sandpaper to smooth the edges of the exposed sides of the tiles. Finally, using a vacuum cleaner or a small broom, clean the gaps so that the new grout will adhere well.
