Sealing the Grout Between Tiles

One of the most overlooked steps in tiling is completely sealing the grout between the tiles. This action prevents moisture from seeping under the tiles, which eventually destroys them. In addition, sealing makes the grout more resistant to stains. Here are the steps necessary to complete this essential procedure.

First, ensure that the grout has completely dried. To be safe, let the grout cure for 48 hours. In fact, some manufacturers even recommend waiting up to a week before sealing. Next, purchase a good-quality silicone-based grout sealer from your local do-it-yourself store. Depending on the brand you bought, the substance can be applied using an applicator brush or sponge. Cover the grout in a thin, even coat of sealer, applying in one direction only.

Once the sealer is completely dry, apply a second coat. Finally, wipe off the excess sealer before this second coat dries. This is an important step because splotches dried sealer become visible on the tiles. However, check out your brand because there are some that do not need to be removed.
